Moving and impressive scenes were witnessed in Belfast today when a handsome and striking obelisk in memory of the men of the Midland Railway Company, Northern Counties Committee, who fell and who served in the Great War was unveiled with befitting ceremonial

The memorial has been erected at the York Road Station-the Belfast terminus of the system-where it will in future catch the eye of countless passengers, and induce more than a passing thought of the heroic railwaymen who helped to preserve the Empire in the era of its greatest peril.

On the plinth the following words are inscribed: –

In honour of the members of the staff, who volunteered and served in his Majesty’s forces during the Great War, 1914-19. Erected by the Midland Railway Company (Northern Counties Committee).

Upon the obelisk there are four bronze tablets, one on each of the sides. The tablet on the south side bears the following inscription: – In remembrance of those who laid down their lives.

On the three other tablets are inscribed the names of those who served and returned.

The unveiling ceremony bore striking similarity in many respects to the memorable proceedings at Thiepval on Saturday last, when the memorial tower to the Ulster Division was solemnly dedicated.

Major John A. Torrens, D.L., (chairman of the Northern Counties Committee of the Midland Railway) decided, and made a touching statement in which he paid a moving tribute to the men whose heroism was been called in remembrance that day. The president of the Methodist Church in Ireland (Rev. W. H. Smyth, B.A.) read portions of Scripture from the Old and New Testaments (Psalms 46 verses 1-7) and Revelations vii., 9-17, after which the Moderator of the General Assembly (Right Rev. W. J. Lowe, D.D.) offered prayer.

At the request of the chairman and amid an impressive scene Major General Nugent, C.B., D.S.O., who had commanded the Ulster Division on active service, unveiled the memorial.

The ‘Last Post’ was sounded, and then Major Torrens laid a wreath of remembrance on the memorial.

After a stirring address by Major-General Nugent the tablet was solemnly dedicated by the Dean of Belfast (Very Rev. T. G. C. Collins, B.D.).

The National Anthem was sung in unison, after which several wreaths of remembrance were laid by representatives of various staffs and friends of the fallen.
