HILLSBOROUGH PARISH CHURCH, Co. Down.

Hillsborough War Heroes.

Tablet unveiled by Lord F. Hill.

Lord Francis Hill on Saturday afternoon unveiled and the Lord Bishop of Down and Connor and Dromore (Right Rev. Dr. Grierson)

dedicated a mural tablet in the Hillsborough Parish Church as a memorial to the 61 members of the parish who served in the war, 19 of whom were killed.

There was a large congregation. The Lord Bishop preached on the occasion, and the Rev. R. H. S. Cooper, Lisburn; Rev. Francis Matchett (rector), and Rev. N. Morrison (curate) took part in the service, which was most inspiring.

In drawing aside the Union Jack Lord Francis Hill said: – “I unveil this tablet in honour of God’s house and in sacred memory of the men of this parish who made the supreme sacrifice in the great war, and in grateful appreciation of those who also served and are still living.”

The names of the fallen were then read, at the request of the Lord Bishop as follow-Lieutenant Claude A. L. Walker, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers; Sergeant John J. Beattie, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers; Sergeant William Magill, Royal Irish Rifles; Corporal James Berry, Royal Irish Rifles; Corporal James Kane, Royal Irish Rifles; Rifleman Richard Crawley, Royal Irish Rifles; Rifleman Robert Harrison, Royal Irish Rifles; Rifleman George Heenan, Royal Irish Rifles; Rifleman George Jess, Royal Irish Rifles; Rifleman William Johnston, Royal Irish Rifles; Rifleman Thomas Moore, Royal Irish Rifles; Rifleman Joseph Thompson, Royal Irish Rifles; Rifleman Moses Thompson, Royal Irish Rifles; Rifleman Robert J. Thompson Royal Irish Rifles; Corporal James Gibson, Royal Scots Fusiliers; Private Frederick Fenton, Royal Scots Fusiliers; Sergeant Joseph Pentland, Royal Dublin Fusiliers; Corporal William J. Watson, Royal Dublin Fusiliers; Private William C. Atkinson, Canadian expeditionary Force; Private Thomas Henderson.

Subsequently the Lord Bishop delivered an uplifting and inspiring sermon from the text: – “All that a man hath he will give for his life.” – Job ii, v4. The praise was specially appropriate to the occasion. Mr. Thomas Forster presiding at the organ with marked ability.
