DOLLINGSTOWN, Co. Down.
Dollingstown War Memorial is located in the village beside the A3 Belfast Road. It was unveiled on 29th January 1921 by Mrs. Watson, Bleech Park. The Rev. Canon Clarendon, B.D., read the local Roll of Honour, and led in prayer.
Dollingstown and Ballymacateer, comprising an area of roughly a square mile, contributed over 100 men to the British forces in the Great War. Of these, twenty did not come back. Although only a few miles from the town of Lurgan, when the question of a memorial for the Parish was raised, they at Dollingstown felt that they had given so many men to the cause that they would prefer to have a memorial of their own. The memorial (which was executed by Messrs. Purely and Millard, Belfast from the design of Mr. Max Clarke, M.R.I. B.A, London), is of Portland stone, and stands some 14 to 15 feet (4.75m) high.
At the foot of the memorial is the inscription; –
They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old age shall not worry them nor the years condemn at the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.
