War Memorial Castlederg
The CTO referred to an application for the fitting of an additional plaque on the above War Memorial Monument with the names of those citizens from the Castlederg area who died in the 1st and 2nd World Wars and whose names are not included in the existing plaque. A quotation for this in the sum of £1,622 plus VAT has now been received from Ironside Trophies & Engraving, Lisburn who have visited the memorial, taken details and state that if the order is confirmed by Wednesday, 24th October they will have the plaque manufactured for 8th November.
Councillor Hussey proposed seconded by Councillor Emery that Council proceed to purchase and erect the plaque. This was agreed.
Councillor Barr asked if it had been confirmed that names had been omitted and who would be responsible for furnishing the names. He said that an assurance would need to be given that the names supplied were of persons who were killed in the 1st and 2nd World War.
Councillor Emery said that only names of people who died in the 1st and 2nd World Wars would be included and those were confirmed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
Councillor Hussey asked that as usual the Council Staff tidy up the area around the War Memorial for the Annual Remembrance Service.
With regard to the provision of a War Memorial in Newtownstewart, the CTO said that he was having discussions to try and identify the ownership of the site in Newtownstewart.
Councillor McHugh asked if there was legislation that Council was responsible for War Memorials and in response the CTO said that the general maintenance of War Memorials by Council was covered in the legislation.
April 2001
Councillor Hussey voiced support for the matter being investigated but stated that custom and practice had already been established with the replacement of the cenotaph in Castlederg and repairs carried out in Sion Mills. He felt that a feasibility study could perhaps be undertaken.
